Abstract:

Rio's reputation as a city of extremes is well-deserved. Outlines the progress of regeneration schemes aimed at controlling the expansion of the 'favelas', now regarded as a political priority, the guiding principle being integration. In terms of architecture and planning the Old Continent remains as a model, but its rules are assumed to be methodological rather than stylistic.
