Letter from Rio
Abstract:
Rio's reputation as a city of extremes is well-deserved. Outlines the progress of regeneration schemes aimed at controlling the expansion of the 'favelas', now regarded as a political priority, the guiding principle being integration. In terms of architecture and planning the Old Continent remains as a model, but its rules are assumed to be methodological rather than stylistic. With renewed commitment and determination to improve the city's housing and social life, Rio may be in for an encouraging new millennium. (Quotes from original text)
