Level of knowledge about self-care in diabetic patients


Abstract:

Diabetes mellitus is a degenerative disease that currently has tripled the number of cases in recent decades caused by bad habits and lifestyles that people lead, a part of it due to the little information they receive. Objective: To determine the level of knowledge about Self-care for the users of the Diabetic Club at the José Carrasco Arteaga Hospital in the city of Cuenca, Ecuador. Materials and methods: Quantitative approach with a descriptive scope and non-experimental design, a data collection instrument was applied to assess the level of knowledge about diabetes (DKQ, 24) which presents high confidentiality (Cronbach coefficient of 0.78) because the characteristics of the research phenomenon and the data collected over a period of time are detailed. Results: It was observed that 60% belong to the age group of 40 to 64 years, of married marital status (46.7%), according to the level of complete secondary education (33.3%), the most prevalent female gender (71.7%). And according to the level of knowledge between three variables it was medium (58.3%). Conclusions: It can be observed and valued that the level of knowledge of self-care about diabetes mellitus was not adequate, of 100% of the patients evaluated 25% was low, being high only in 16.7%. Promoting the creation of strategies that intervene in the knowledge of the patient with this chronic condition to reduce morbidity and mortality.
