LiNbO<inf>3</inf> modulator for binary and multilevel polarization modulation

Abstract:

The modulation of the state of polarization (SOP) of light has been recently proposed for transmission of information on optical fibers. Polarization-shift keying (POLSK) is suitable for coherent and direct-detection (DD) systems. The paper presents a flexible multilevel polarization modulator based on a specifically designed and built LiNbO3 device. The modulator can produce any SOP and therefore can generate any multilevel POLSK format.
