Lo invisible de la migración: contextualización de la situación venezolana en la ciudad de Cuenca, Ecuador

Abstract:

The current economic crisis in Venezuela has resulted in unsustainable, dangerous, and extreme living conditions, leading to the migration of a significant portion of its population. Ecuador now finds itself as one of several countries where many venezuelans fleeing crippling poverty and crime have settled, in search of new opportunities and a chance at a better life. This work provides an intimate depiction of the venezuelan migrant situation as it has developed, specifically, in Cuenca, Ecuador over the last 2 years, with the intent of generating empathy by showing a present and distinct reality that tends to go unnoticed. The various relationships, conversations, and moments shared with these refugees during the course of this work serve as the foundation for the development of the intimate, photojournalistic portrayal of their circumstances. The reality and authenticity afforded by this artistic medium played a fundamental role in effectively conveying the theme of the project and enriching its artistic quality by breaking away from schemes that seek to solely represent events in a critical or subjective manner. Visual representations of pivotal moments of the lives of the subjects of this work were able to be captured through the implementation of both candid photography as well as staged compositions. The series of photos produced through the course of this project have resulted in a panorama that provides a unique perspective of the migrant crisis to its spectators, capable of effectively bringing attention to an important issue and shaping the awareness and perception of its audience.
