Locally-determined Voltage Droop Control for Distribution Systems

Abstract:

Distributed energy resources have the potential to mitigate both undervoltage and overvoltage problems in distribution system through their reactive power capability. The most practical way to implement the voltage control is through a local droop control which requires no communication with the neigbouring buses or a centralised control centre. However, determining a suitable droop coefficient for the distributed energy sources at different locations in the system requires knowledge of the grid parameters. In this work, a practical way of determining the droop coefficients locally is proposed. The method is applied on most commonly used test systems, and validated against the traditional droop control. Results show that the proposed droop coefficient brought the voltage profile closer to the reference voltages for both overvoltage and undervoltage problems.
