Low-birthweight piglets in pig production. Review
Abstract:
Low birthweight piglets are present in all pig farms whose litters come from hyperprolific sows, this being the current trend of pig production. This type of piglets generates economic losses for the producer since they have been shown to have high morbidity and mortality rates because there are several organic-functional alterations found and those piglets that survive have lower yield to the carcass and lower meat quality at the moment of the sacrifice compared to his littermates. Over the past few years there have been several studies in which different additives and nutrients have been evaluated in order to reduce mortality and improve the productive performance of these animals, seeking to generate greater income for the producer. This paper aims to collect relevant information on the main aspects related to low birth weight piglets such as their origin, organic alterations and recommendations for their nutritional management.
