Luminescence imaging of surface cracks and surface-density gradients in alumina
Abstract:
Luminescence imaging is a practical real-time, nondestructive alternative to Archimedes density measurements for detecting density and density gradients in polycrystalline Al2O3 that can be used in ceramic production or process development environments. Thus, luminescence results from ultraviolet and/or visible light excitation of trace quantities of Cr3+ ions that are naturally present in Bayer-processed Al2O3. Ceramics that do not reveal natural luminescence can be stained with a luminescent and/or chemiluminescent solution to image cracks and density gradients.
