Luna verde, by Joaquín Beleño and locks of language

Abstract:

The canal novel has not had a significant presence in Latin American literary studies outside of Panama, despite addressing common themes found in other national literatures in the region. Joaquín Beleño (1922-1988) has been recognized as the founder of this genre with the publication of Luna Verde in 1951. We will focus on the interesting treatment given to language in this novel, which can be described as an authentic oralized novel that turns the use of language into a parameter for the construction of otherness. In short, the language in Joaquín Beleño's Luna Verde, much like the Panama Canal, which opens and closes, both brings together and separates, and contributes to the construction of a problematized and heterogeneous border identity.
