MEDIA LITERACY OF YOUNG BOLIVIANS IN THE PRESENCE OF THE MANIPULATION OF INFORMATION BY THE AUDIOVISUAL MEDIA
Abstract:
The increasingly complex relationship between conventional media, digital platforms, political actors and audiences merits an exhaustive analysis of the functions and relationships between them and the perceptions about media and media manipulation from youth audiences. This research addresses the manipulation of Bolivian television news content by commercial and political interests. The analysis has a Latin American theoretical-critical foundation, in which the qualitative technique of Group Discussion (GD) was applied to four groups of high school students in the main cities of Bolivia: El Alto-La Paz, Santa Cruz, Cochabamba and Oruro. The originality of this work is based on considering the opinions of young people, primary consumers of audiovisual media, giving prominence to their concerns and ideas. As the main findings, it was evidenced that young students highlight the excessive political manipulation of information from public and community media, recognizing the need to develop media competencies to face the alleged social control. On the other hand, they propose citizen interpellation through the use of Information Technologies to democratize communication.
