Mammography as a screening method in breast cancer
Abstract:
Background: breast cancer is the most frequent pathology with the highest morbidity and mortality worldwide and continues to be the leading cause of cancer death in Ecuadorian women. Objective: to determine the use of mammography as a screening method for breast cancer in the Ecuadorian Institute of Social Security, José Carrasco Arteaga. Methodology: observational, descriptive, cross-sectional study. Mammographic reports of women whose ages ranged from 40 to 70 years were included. The information was tabulated in Excel matrices and the results presented in a descriptive way, the statistical significance was established with the value of p < 0.05. Results: the factors that showed a greater probability of performing mammography as a breast cancer screening and that had a statistically significant relationship were: age > 50 years, higher education and high social class. The most commonly reported findings in mammographic reports were: masses and microcalcifications. Regarding the BIRADS classification, categories 2, 3 and 4 were the most prevalent. Conclusions: mammography proved to be an adequate method in the detection of breast cancer; and their performance is influenced by age, high educational and economic level.
