Management of the wandering spleen in childhood: Report of two cases
Abstract:
This is a report of two children aged thirty and eighteen months presenting with splenic gangrene from torsion and abdominal mass due to wandering spleens, respectively. Treatments were by splenectomy and splenopexy. Wandering spleen is an uncommon condition due to failure of fixation of the organ in the left upper quadrant of the abdomen. The presentation is varied, ranging from acute abdominal pain due to torsion or intestinal obstruction due to an abdominal mass but may be asymptomatic. Though diagnosis is frequently made only at laparotomy, abdominal ultrasonography is useful in diagnosis. When the spleen is viable, splenopexy using several methods is safe and should also be performed for asymptomatic patients as the risk of splenic torsion and gangrene is ever present In the presence of gangrene from torsion, splenectomy is necessary.
