Manila Bay: Status of its fisheries and management


Abstract:

Manila Bay, a major fishing ground in the Philippines, is a typical multigear and multispecies fisheries. Observations on board medium trawl were conducted to study and determine the status of Manila Bay fisheries. Results showed that Manila Bay possesses the characteristics typical of an overfished fishing ground, namely: (1) fluctuation of annual production; (2) decreasing trend in CPUE; (3) decreasing trend of the average size of fish; (4) succession of species composition; (5) decline in the number of species per fishing operation; and (6) increase of boat density. Up to 1958, there was a rapid increase of the total production of the Bay. But a subsequent decline was noted in the later years. A recent study showed a massive economic and biological overfishing of its demersal resources.
