Mapping Deforestation and Forest Degradation in Southern Ghana Using Different Time-Series Algorithms


Abstract:

Proper mapping of deforestation and forest degradation is necessary to inform environmental decision making, as well as reporting to international programs like REDD+ that work to combat global climate change. As part of a SERVIR led global comparison project aimed at improving the understanding of deforestation and degradation methodologies across different tropical countries, three change detection algorithms were explored using Landsat time series data from 2000 to 2020 on Google Earth Engine. These include LandTrendr, CCDC-SMA, and a random forest-based method called Multivariate Time-series Disturbance Detection (MTDD).
