Marine transformer lifespan estimation by hotspot temperature measurements

Abstract:

Transformer lifespan prognosis techniques have been constantly researched and refined over the years due to the benefits that they bring in asset management and pbkp_redictive maintenance. In this paper, a mathematical model for accounting the harmonic currents generated by nonlinear loads that cause a transformer to age at a faster rate is proposed. Temperature evolution and their relationship between linear and non-linear loads are experimentally measured over the winding surface, which correlates with the mathematical estimation. Thermal time constant of the transformer is arrived from the experimental data. Thermographs that were taken during a full load operation of the transformer, identifies the hot-spot locations over the winding.
