Maximizing Power System Loadability Based on Optimal Allocation of SVC and STATCOM
Abstract:
In this paper, Improved Moth Flame Optimization (IMFO) algorithm is implemented for optimal allocation of Flexible Alternating Current Transmission System (FACTS) devices to enhance the power system (PS) loadability and reduce generation cost. Two types of shunt FACTS devices are applied in this work; Static Synchronous Compensator (STATCOM) and Static VAR Compensator (SVC). IMFO algorithm is integrated with Continuation Power Flow (CPF) for calculating the Maximum Loadability Point (MLP) with inclusion of the controllers to solve Optimum Power Flow (OPF) problem represented by multi-objective function. This function is formulated for improvement of the total power system loadability, minimizing of generation fuel cost, reduction of the total power system losses and minimizing of the voltage stability index. Simulations are carried out upon the IEEE30-bus standard test system. Comparison is held between the obtained results by the suggested approach and MFO. The comparison reveals the powerfulness and efficiency of the suggested approach.
