Media education in Ecuador. Exploration and description of a latent need
Abstract:
Media literacy in Ecuador is in a process of growth. Studies have shown that the level of media literacy of students and teachers from high schools and universities, on average, is medium despite the heavy investment that has been made in recent years to improve it. This chapter analyses the socio-political context, the regulatory framework and current projects around media and digital literacy in Ecuador. Although the Ecuadorian regulatory framework is favourable, the use and application of new technologies do not meet the necessary criteria to be considered as a mediatic and participatory society. It is a challenge for academia, government and citizens to implement a continuous programme to improve the performance of media and digital literacy among the general population, due to its importance for global integration and the reduction of inequalities.
