Microalgae: Ecology, health impact and nutrition

Abstract:

This work presents a description of the ecology of freshwater microalgae, as well as those of coastal and marine environ-ments, making an analysis of the predominant species in different types of aquariums, taking into consideration that they constitute a valuable nutritional source for humans and animals, with biotechnological and industrial utility. The objective of the study was to characterize the importance of microalgae and their contribution to important economic activities such as the production of food and feed, cosmetics and health-related compounds. A qualitative, documentary and non-experimen-tal systematic review was carried out by means of a search of articles in Spanish and English, located in databases such as: Scopus, Imbiomed, Pubmed, ClinicalKey and Science Direct. The updated statistical data were obtained from the web pages of the WHO, Centre for Evidence-Based Medicine and FAO. In this way, 38 articles were selected as part of the stu-dy. The results show the role of microalgae in ecology, their potential for food production and their benefits for medical and pharmaceutical biotechnology in the synthesis of growth factors, hormones, antibodies, vaccines and immune regulators.
