Migration, Betterment, and Modernity: Encounters and Un-Encounters Between Mobility and Access to Education as Life Projects in Three Generations of Migrants from Loja, Ecuador1

Abstract:

In this chapter, I examine the ways in which migration connects to aspirations for social mobility and education within life projects constructed in the experience of a small city in the Andean highlands. From a biographical approach, I focus on the trajectories of three generations of migrant men and women to analyze how the aspiration to obtain an education is closely linked to desires for social mobility, and to improve their future life. I demonstrate how, over the course of these three generations, these desires are interwoven with migration projects, and how, once these projects are undertaken, the aspiration to an education is sustained or transformed. This chapter also highlights the changes that take place through the generations in these interconnected aspirations of education and social and spatial mobility.
