Modeling of a continuously variable desmodromic engine valve timing mechanism using object oriented programming

Abstract:

Solid modelling is important in mechanical engineering design. It is particularly useful in the simulation of mechanical systems consisting of many complex elements having relative translatory and rotatory motion between them. These objects or machine elements making up these systems have much in common, allowing the development of a general set of machine element characteristics. It is because of this property of machine elements that Object Oriented Programming (OOP) languages seem to provide a handy framework for the implementation of a solid modeler. Thus, this paper describes the implementation of a 3D solid modeler using OOP in Turbo Pascal to the modelling and dynamic simulation of a novel continuously variable valve duration and timing (VVT) mechanism adaptable to the intake and exhaust valves of internal combustion engines. This is only one example of the usefulness of this menu driven OOP modeler, which has wider applicability.
