Models and algorithm for the calculation of the impulse response on IR-wireless indoor channels

Abstract:

The indoor optical channel simulation can significantly benefit the design of high performance IR systems, but requires an algorithm and models that fit correctly the channel characteristics. In this work, a Monte Carlo ray-tracing algorithm and new models for the calculation of the impulse response on IR channels are proposed. In contrast to previous works, we used the Phong's model to approximate the reflection pattern of the indoor surfaces, which is able to approximate the behaviour of those surfaces that present a high specular component. Furthermore, a model for the effective signal-collection area of an IR detector with a nonimaging concentrator and filter is reported. We also present computer simulation results to illustrate the influence of those models and to suggest a configuration of a conventional receiver using angle-diversity.
