Models of instruction: Some light on the model muddle

DONALD J. REYES odels of instruction are useful tools for educa-M tors serving in any number of roles. For the teacher educator, they provide a convenient organizer for teaching the precepts of effective teaching or for teaching the steps of lesson planning. For the teacher in the classroom at any level, models of instruction can structure his or her decision making. For example, the teacher’s choice of classroom questions, homework assignments, introductions to lessons, and so on, are typically influenced by the instructional model being used as an organizer. Staff development specialists and instructional supervisors can use models of instruction to organize classroom observations and subsequent improvement suggestions, as well as in planning staff development programs.
