Monitoring and irrigation of an urban garden using IoT

Abstract:

The traditional methods used in agriculture often have disadvantages related to consumption, management and conservation of water for irrigation. The emergence of new technologies such as Internet of Things and information management has accelerated the develop of 'modern agricuture' by mitigating or at best eliminating the problems mentioned above. In this paper is presented the design and implementation of an embedded system that uses Internet of Things and a set of sensors and actuators to allow the monitoring of climatic variables and irrigation of an urban garden located in the parking facilities of the Universidad Politécnica Salesiana. Sensors measure parameters such as environmental humidity and temperature, soil moisture and temperature, CO2 levels, luminosity and crop presence; processed within an ATMEL microcontroller, which takes decisions for irrigation based on crop requirements. This information is received by the remote server through the WiFi protocol, which stores it in the cloud within a database and sends it to the client computer or mobile device, who will be able to access this data in real time from any location where it has access to the Internet.
