Morphology of Hibiscus rosa-sinensis pollen grain from bud to senescence stage as criterion for taxonomy
Abstract:
We analyzed the Hibiscus rosa-sinensis pollen morphology in three stages: bud, anthesis and senescence. Three parameters were calculated: spine index, D-spine index, and spine density. The observation by SEM clearly demonstrate that the pollen in anthesis stage has a very well defined structure compared to bud and senescence ones: spines are long, pointed and the pollen grain is quite spherical. Moreover, we evidence for the first time to our knowledge that the commonly used in palynology spine index factor is insufficient to identify a species within the family Malvacea, mainly due to the evolution of such factor in the three studied stages.
