Multispectral NDVI aerial image system for vegetation analysis by using a consumer camera

Abstract:

The Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) has been used for quantify the health and status of vegetation in a specific zone. Images used for these studies are obtained with NOAA/AVHRR (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration/Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer) satellite images, this images represent high cost for low and middle budget organization. This work present the methodology for develop, calibration and test of a multispectral NDVI image system for aerial platforms. This system has been built in base of consumer devices as Point&Shot Camera with trigger, focus and zoom control, Gel Filters, free axis stabilizer, 5.8Ghz RF transceiver for video streaming and ZigBee transceiver for data link. HMI, camera position control, trigger, zoom and multispectral images processing are done with code written in MATLAB ®.
