A Molecular Systematics of the Genus Culicoides Latreille (Diptera: Ceratopogonidae) from Ecuador
Abstract:
Biting midges of Culicoides genus comprises about 1340 species worldwide, grouped into 39 subgenera, species groups and some unclassified groups. Between July 2010 and September 2012 were made entomological collections at two locations in the Amazon Basin, one site in the foothills of the Cordillera Occidental and one site located in Western High Andes. A total of 36 species were identified, 16 of them were new records for Ecuador. Molecular analysis of C1-D2 regions of the 28S rDNA of 22 species corroborated partially the morphological identification of these species. The subgenera Hoffmania and Anilomyia including the main vectors of bluetongue disease seem to be monophyletic groups. Our results suggest that the actual classification of the genus Culicoides must be revised. INTRODUCTION:
