NUTRITIONAL INTERVENTION IN WORKERS OF THE YOUNG LIVING ECUADOR FARM TO REDUCE THE RISK FACTORS ASSOCIATED WITH THE METABOLIC SYNDROME BASED ON THE HEALTH BELIEF MODEL: A PILOT STUDY

Abstract:

Metabolic syndrome is known as a group of metabolic abnormalities that increase the risk of developing cardiovascular diseases and type 2 diabetes. The cost of health for companies is very high for workers who have obesity or metabolic syndrome compared to healthy workers. Metabolic syndrome is closely related to obesity and this in turn is associated with a poor diet (high intake of carbohydrates and fats). The aim of this study is to reduce the risk factors associated with this syndrome in workers of Young Living Ecuador Farm. A longitudinal follow-up was carried out, with a nutritional evaluation at the beginning and the end of the intervention in 30 workers. A semi-elaborated questionnaire was elaborated based on the theoretical model “Health Belief Model” (HBM) to determine the knowledge, beliefs, and barriers that present to feed themselves healthily. The nutritional intervention consisted in the elaboration of a dietetic plan and nutritional educational workshops. Within the statistical analyses, we found a significant difference in two groups of three of the variables analyzed weight, Body Mass Index (BMI) and waist circumference WC. Concerning the results of the administrative group we observed a significant difference between the weight at the beginning and the end of the intervention with a p-value of 0.0215, together with the weight, there was a significant reduction of the BMI with a p-value of 0.0223. The results of the operator group were also significant in both weight and BMI variables with a p-value of 0.0008 and 0.0007 respectively. Also, in this group, a significant decrease in waist circumference was found, pvalue 0.0235. According to the study conducted, we showed that the application of nutritional education contributed in the significant reduction of weight, BMI and WC.
