Abstract:

Necrotizing enterocolitis (ECN) is the most frequent and severe gastrointestinal emergency in newborns, especially affecting newborns preterm and very low weight at birth (<1500 g). It is reported that affects 1-5% of all newborns admitted to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit with a mortality rate of 10 to 50%. We present two cases of NEC treated in the intensive care neonatology of Hospital IESS Ibarra, whose main risk factors were prematurity and low birth weight at birth and were initiated an aggressive supportive treatment that avoided more complications.
