Neotectonics and rivers of the Amazon headwaters

Abstract:

Arguments to support the hypothesis that a river network in subsiding basins is more dependent on the structural framework and neotectonics than hydrological, sedimentary and climatic conditions are developed and found to be conclusive. Fluvial-tectonic relationships are analyzed in two different, but related, environments: the central part of the Maranon Basin and the southern basin border. The analysis leads to the conclusion that erosion will persist along the bluffs in the Maranon Basin. Structures at that location should be set back a reasonable distance. Within the basin proper, Maranon River is expected to move north, whereas Ucayali River will move to the southeast.
