New biomarkers for the assessment of cardiovascular risk
Abstract:
Cardiovascular disease (CVD) remains the leading cause of morbimortality worldwide. Thus, the assessment of cardiovascular risk (CVR) is a constant part of daily medical practice. Identification of new biomarkers and the examination of their clinical utility for the pbkp_rediction of CVR constitute one of the main study objects of molecular and clinical-epidemiological biomedical research. Their successful implementation may result in a significant reduction of the burden associated to CVD in terms of quality of life, productivity, and financial costs. The use of biomarkers is one of the centerpieces of the precision medicine movement, which aims to offer more personalized care, accounting for individual variations in genetic content and the influence of environmental and lifestyle factors with the establishment of more effective and targeted treatment goals. Regarding CVR, novel biomarkers have been identified in relation to myocardial injury and stress, chronic low-grade inflammation, and various other relevant pathophysiologic phenomena. This article revises essential aspects of new proposals for biomarkers for the evaluation of CVR.
