New myths and science fiction Approaching technological objects through art
Abstract:
This article reflects on the ability of science fiction to speculate around the effects of technological objects on social and historical processes. With the intention of studying techno-scientific artistic expressions, the possibilities of methodological perspectives such as media archaeology and new materialisms, which focus on material objects as key elements for understanding history, are applied. Often, these artistic expressions present similar discourses to the ones found in some forms of science fiction; more precisely, the ones that address topics around technological innovation, media technologies and the effects that technology has in society. Science fiction, understood as a reflection of the social concerns of the context in which it is created, generates new mythologies and revisits ancient ones, becoming a powerful tool and inspiration for the understanding of contemporary art.
