New sample design for the study of the relaxation of residual stresses in induction hardened bars

Abstract:

A new test sample geometry has been designed to aid in the study of stress relaxation within the induction hardened layer on round bars subjected to cyclic loading. The sample has an overall C-shape with a T-shaped cross section. The specimen geometry allows the outer surface to experience higher stress levels than the inner surface under given loading conditions. Prototype C-shaped specimens were machined out of a 2 5/8 inch (66.7 mm) diameter bars of 1530 and 1530 vanadium modified type steels and tested in compression. The outer to inner surface stress ratio found was about 1.5. By inducing local plastic deformation compressive residual stresses of various magnitudes could be created at the outer surface of the C-shaped test specimens.
