Noise Levels in Pressure Boxes

Abstract:

To the Editor: The recent report of the successful use of continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP)1 has prompted widespread investigation of the technic using a pressurized headbox, with some highly enthusiastic preliminary reports from other nurseries.2, 3 In working with a “Gregory box” built to the design described in the original paper, we have come upon a serious hazard that we consider important enough to be called to the attention of other investigators. The sound pressure in the box used by Gregory was reported as 95 db; in our chamber, the sound pressure ranged from 80 to 86 db at levels. © 1972, Massachusetts Medical Society. All rights reserved.
