Nonossifying Fibroma: Electron Microscopic Examination of Two Cases Supporting a Histiocytic Rather Than a Fibroblastic Origin.
Abstract:
MATERIALS AND METHODS The tissues were obtained by curettage from the lesions. The specimens consisted of multiple fragments of bone and soft tissue. A diagnosis of nonossifying fibroma was rendered in each case on the paraffin embedded, hematoxylin and eosin stained histopathology slides. The preparations for electron microscopy were done on representative tissue pieces and included fixation in glutaraldehyde and osmium tetroxide, embedding in low-viscosity epoxy resin, and postcontrasting of the ultrathin section with uranyl acetate and lead citrate. The thick sections of the plastic embedded material for light microscopic survey were stained with an alcoholic toluidine blue-basic fuchsin combination. Samples examined ultrastructurally included all areas of the neoplasms, with a special emphasis on the spindle cell areas rather than the areas with clusters of histiocytes identified by light microscopy.
