Note on the nickel and chromium content of cherts from the Archaean Swaziland Supergroup (South Africa)

Abstract:

Verification of analyses of chert samples from the Swaziland Supergroup, for which unusually high concentrations of Ni and Cr were previously reported by Dungworth and Schwarz, yielded much lower values of less than 54 ppm Ni and 68 ppm Cr. These data are comparable to those from acid volcanic rocks with which these cherts are associated and from which some of the cherts appear to have formed through silicification. We suspect that the abnormal Ni and Cr concentrations were caused by contaminations introduced during pulverizing in Ni-Cr-alloy equipment. An apparent relation between high Ni content and organic compounds in the Swaziland cherts is therefore not substantiated. © 1979.
