Nutritional educational program for university instructors related to cardiometabolic risk factors

Abstract:

Cardiometabolic diseases such as diabetes, obesity, overweight and high blood pressure are considered risky because they can cause complications at the cardiovascular level and peripheral arteries. The purpose of this work was to evaluate the effects of a nutritional educational program on cardiometabolic risk factors in teachers of a public university. Applied research of quasi-experimental design with pre and posttest measurement of a single group of 60 university instructors. The following data were collected: body mass index (BMI), abdominal circumference (ABP), lipid profile, glucose and blood pressure. The intervention program consisted of workshops and educational sessions for a period of 6 months. The results showed a decrease of 2.2 kg/m2 in BMI (p= 0.001) and 4.2 cm in ABP (p= 0.001), but an increase of 4.9 mg/dl in mean glucose levels (p= 0.013) and 20.7 mg/dl of cholesterol (p= 0.001). It is concluded that there are changes with a tendency to normality in the anthropometric and metabolic variables of the instructors before and after the intervention program.
