Obtaining a dry extract from punicagranatum(Pomegranate) by spray drying

Abstract:

Objective: T o obtain a dry extract by spray drying from the punicagranatum hydroalcoholic extract on bench and industrial scale. Method: Hydroalcoholic extract batches on bench and industrial scales were produced. Dry extract batches by spray drying from hydroalcoholic extract were then produced. Yield, humidity and total polyphenol contents were evaluated. The results were statistically compared. A toxicity study was conducted in the dry extract. Results: The analysis of dry extract batches proved that there was no significant difference among them. The yields in all the cases were higher than 70 % on bench and 85% on industrial scale, respectively whereas the polyphenol content was over 25%. The toxicity study demonstrated that the dry extract is not toxic at the tested dose. Conclusions: The drying process is homogeneous, reproducible and non-toxic.
