On Metzgeria saccata mitt. (Marchantiophyta: Metzgeriaceae) with description of a new species from South America

Abstract:

We describe the new liverwort Metzgeria holzii Gradst. and Benítez sp. nov. from southern Ecuador and southeastern Brazil. The species was previous recorded as M. saccata, a species from Australasia characterized by the presence of numerous inflated sacs along the thallus margins. The new species differs from M. saccata in several important respects, including the shape and size of the sacs, the distribution of hairs on the thallus surface and the ornamentation of the shoot calyptra. The new species is dedicated to the late Dr. Ingo Holz, German bryologist, who first discovered the species.
