Optimal Coordination of Directional Overcurrent Relays Using a Simple Optimization Method

Abstract:

The purpose of protection devices in the power systems is to detect the fault occurrence in the protected zone and isolate it as fast as possible out of the healthy rest of the zone. Hence, In order to coordinate the functioning of directional overcurrent relays (DOCRs) in the electrical power system, a straightforward optimization approach is presented in this study. The DOCRs are coordinated using a straightforward optimization technique called the Roa-3 algorithm. The coordination problem is seen as a non-linear optimization problem with a number of operational constraints. The coordination process's major goal is to discover the ideal settings for relay configurations regarding the time dial setting (TDS) and pick up a current to reduce the operating times' sum for the primary relays. The best coordination should make sure that the backup and primary relay pair operations don't conflict. IEEE 15-bus is used to verify the Rao-3 algorithm's performance. The obtained findings demonstrate the superiority and efficacy of the Rao-3 algorithm and offer a reliable and efficient solution to the coordination issue with DOCRs.
