Optimal Coordination of Overcurrent Relays Using Metaphor-less Simple Method

Abstract:

This paper presents a simple optimization technique to coordinate the operation of overcurrent relays in the electrical power system. A simple optimization method called Roa-1 algorithm is adopted to coordinate the directional overcurrent relays (DOCRs). Coordination is considered a non-linear optimization problem with various operational constraints. The main objective of this coordination process is to find the optimal values for relay settings based on the time dial setting (TDS) and pick up current to minimize the operating times' sum for the main relays. The optimal coordination should ensure that there is no violation between the operation of back up and primary relays pairs. The performance of the developed algorithm is validated using IEEE 8-bus systems. The accomplished results show the effectiveness and superiority of the developed algorithm in the coordination problem of DOCRs.
