Optimal Placement of Phasor Measurement Units for State Estimation of Electrical Power Systems

Abstract:

Phasor measurement units (PMUs) play an important role in power system state estimation which facilitates the presence of synchronous phasor measurements besides performing the system full observability. The PMU placement is considered an optimization problem (OPP) which aims to observe all system buses with a minimum number of PMU installation. For ensuring full network observability, this paper presents a topology-based algorithm considering essential factors such as; system topology, zero injection buses (ZIBs). In this work, OPP is formulated as integer linear programming (ILP) to accomplish all equality constraints. Simulation results of ILP are tempted with two standard IEEE 14-bus and 30-bus systems. The results refer to that considering ZIB in the allocation of PMU placement reduces the quantity of the required units to preserve the whole system totally observable. In addition, the state estimation analysis is carried out to present the efficiency of PMU placement in decreasing the estimation errors.
