Optimización del diseño y operación de los sistemas de lacunas de estabilización de alta carga

Abstract:

The follow-up and evaluation for a period of two years of the primary facultative-aerobic pond system located at the Experimental Water Treatment Plant of the Engineering Faculty of the Universidad Central de Venezuela, allowed us to show its capacity to operate under high loads for the treatment of municipal wastewater in tropical environment conditions. The system was evaluated using criteria such as its efficiency to remove organic material, nutrients and other parameters, as well as its capacity to maintain the conditions for which it was designed, and through a probabilistic analysis based on the stability and reliability of the effluent in terms of organic material content. On the basis of the results obtained, high rate loading is defined as from 800 to 1400 kg. BOD ha-1 d-1 for the facultative and from 400 to 500 kg. ha-1 d-1 for the aerobic ponds. The application of these loads result in lower land requirements and consequently, capital cost savings, showing once again that stabilization ponds are a competitive and economic wastewater treatment system.
