Optimization of urban solid waste collection under a geographic information systems approach, a case study

Abstract:

The present work shows a proposal of urban solid waste collection routes for the Ibarra city, using territorial districting concepts to level the workload among the collection trucks and ensure access to the collection service for all residents. In this proposal, 11 micro collection routes are implemented, considering aspects such as waste generation rates, collection frequencies and operational costs of the trucks. To this end, in the first steps an updated geographic database is consolidated and then this information is processed in the Arc-GIS under the focus of capacited arcs. The results obtained are contrasted with the model currently established in the canton through indicators of cost per ton collected in each collection route, going from an average cost of 37.53 $/t to an average cost of 8.27 $/t with the present proposal, as well as a balance in the mentioned costs.
