Orbital myiasis caused by Cochliomyia hominivorax severe in the Andean region of Ecuador


Abstract:

We report a case in a woman Kichwa indigenous of 91 years old with destructive orbital myiasis compromising eyeball and bone tissue destruction of orbital, nasal, ethmoidal and frontal sinus, confirmed by computed axial tomography with 3D bone reconstruction. The patient was infested in a temperate zone of 2,418 m altitude in the Andean province of Imbabura, Ecuador. The patient presented at Hospital of Cotacachi with a tumor with perforations in the right eyeball with a suppurative and foul-smelly discharge, observing and extracting more than hundred fly larvae. These maggots were identified as Cochliomyia hominivorax for the disposition of their respiratory spiracles.
