Organic photonic materials

Abstract:

Various types of organic polymeric systems having third order nonlinear susceptibility, were presented at the Symposium. In this report however, only a nanocomposite system consisting of a polydiacetytrene dispersed in an amorphous host polymer, is described. N,N′-din-butylocta3,5-diynylenediurethane was mixed with a copolymer of vinylacetate and vinylpyrrolidone in chloroform and the solution was evaporated to form a highly transparent film, which developed red coloring on irradiation of UV light. The maximum concentration of the diacetylene in the host polymer was about 20% by weight, and over this concentration the films contained large crystal particles which made them opaque. The third order nonlinear susceptibility measured by Z-scan method with 800 nm found to be in the range of 10-11 esu.
