Ornamental shrubs of Maracaibo, Zulia state, Venezuela
Abstract:
The inventory of species of ornamental shrubs in Maracaibo, Zulia state, Venezuela, was performed from botanical collections in 16 parishes of the city, from May 2011 to April 2012. eighty-one species belonging to 25 families and 60 genera were identified. The families who were with the largest number of taxa were Apocynaceae (13 spp.), Euphorbiaceae (10 spp.), Rubiaceae and Cactaceae (eight spp.). The 45.56% of the species were Native American and 54.43% introduced. The greatest number of species was found in the parishes located in the northeast of the city, especially in areas with further development town. This information is useful for studies related to projects of urban landscape in general.
