Osier a fascinating and sustainable material to establish a successful dual collaboration between craftsman and designer

Abstract:

This research intends a general view to the current context of the osier industry and to show the excellent propeties that a plant has, without detracting its direct competitors as rattan, bamboo and other fibers, as sustainable materials for the manufacturing of home products or giving solutions to design needs, either decoration or search of functional products for home, in the actual Chile. It is also treated in an important manner how this advantages can be used to establish a collaborative relation between the craftsman, who has in his hands the inherited natural talent from generation to generation to manufacture and mold this fiber as he desires, and the designer, and, an experienced profesional that manages current creation, design and ergonomics techniques, as well as the needs and segments of possible consumers in the actual market. This niche that is growing, can in the future bring great benefits for both agents, where every time industrialization and the standarization of products, are taking away place to the differentiation and 'hand made' things. Where everything is being done to use the materials that have zero Carbon footprint, that are sustainable and could accomodate reuse.
