Oxidation behavior of MgO-based castable prepared using crushed-bricks aggregates

Abstract:

MgO-based castable was prepared using crushed MgO-C bricks as aggregate, and hydratable alumina as binder. Oxidation behavior was evaluated measuring the weight loss of samples subjected to: a) TGA tests, b) isothermal treatment in air at 600 and 1000°C with varying soaking times, and c) reducing atmosphere at several temperatures for one hour. MgO-based castable results were compared with unused MgO-C bricks samples. At 1000°C, weight loss differences between castable and brick samples were 0,5% in reducing atmosphere and 2.1% in air. These results are promising for future developments of MgO-C castables and for the on-going research in this area.
