Kettler Department of Anaesthesiology, Emergency and Intensive Care Medicine, University of Goettingen, D-37070 Goettingen Though there has been fundamental progress in emergency medicine over the last decades, resuscitative efforts still remain unsuccessful in the majority of cases, only 10 to 20% of the victims survive up to hospital discharge. About 30% of cardiac arrest survivors suffer permanent neurologic damage due to prolonged duration of cerebral ischemia. The dilemma of initiating CPR has been characterized as identifying those patients with a high potential for long-term survival.
