P. 161 Factors affecting the efficacy of adjunctive aripiprazole in risperidone-or paliperidone-induced hyperprolactinemia
Abstract:
Background: Hyperprolactinemia (HPRL) is an important but neglected adverse effect of antipsychotics, that can lead to both short-and long-term side effects [1]. Antipsychotic drugs block dopamine-D2 receptors on lactotroph cells in the anterior pituitary gland and thus remove the inhibitor influence of dopamine on prolactine secretion. The highest rates of HPRL are reported in association with amisulpride, risperidone (R) and paliperidone (P)[2]. Aripiprazole (ARI), when used in combination with other atypical antipsychotics, can normalize prolactine (PRL) levels, with a lower risk of relapse compared with decreasing the dose of antipsychotic or replacement therapies [3]. Objective: To study the influence of clinical factors in R or P (R/P)-induced HPRL and observe the effect of the addition of aripriprazole (ARI) 5mg/day for 28 days on PRL levels. Methods: Seventy-four schizophrenic patients (DSM-IV-R), mean age …
