PARTICIPATORY RISK VULNERABILITY ASSESSMENT OF SMALL RICE FARMERS IN SANTA LUCIA - ECUADOR

Abstract:

This study assessed the market, climatic and biological en-vironmental risks faced by farmers of "El Mate" Irrigation As-sociation of Santa Lucía canton in Ecuador, to determine their level of vulnerability. A descriptive statistics analysis was car-ried out with 220 surveys and the RASCRA methodology, de-veloped by the Agricultural Risk Management Team of the World Bank, was applied through focus group analysis. It was determined that farmers are vulnerable to price risks, climate change and natural resource contamination, a situation that is exacerbated by the conventional rice production system and low access to financial services. This study contributes to the design of mitigation alternatives, based on territorial social capital.
